First on 1st Art + Music Walk
Saturday, August 7, 12 – 4 PM

Are you–or do you know–a professional photographer or videographer? Volunteer to document the event and be recognized among our sponsors!

If professional photography/videography’s not your thing, that’s OK–there are plenty of other opportunities to help. We’re looking for volunteers to:

• “Man” tables in the new market section of the artwalk (between 12 and 4)
• Coordinate kids’ activities
• Set up (starting at 9) and break down (after 4)
• Direct traffic, greet guests, etc.

Last year’s event attracted 400 people from Bloomingdale and beyond, raising the visibility of our neighborhood and our local businesses District-wide. Please help make our second annual 1st on First Art + Music Walk an even bigger success!

Damian Elias is another one of the panelists on the (e)merge panel hosted by Conner Contemporary Gallery on July 31 at 4pm. The panel will explore issues facing artists in DC in developing their careers and building community. Dr. Elias says, “Artists aren’t as healthy mentally or physically than the general population.”

With oil still spilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and multiple wars ongoing, can art make a difference in our nation’s capital?

That was the focus of Does Art Matter, a lively discussion sponsored by the Capital Fringe Festival’s Training Factory. On a steamy Monday night, artists and art lovers got together to talk about the role of the creative arts in DC.

The Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation, in partnership with The Pink Line Project andPamela’s Punch , will host the 1st Annual “Blue Crush” Summer Celebration to Crush Colon Cancer on Tuesday, July 27, from 7-10PM at the new and exquisite Adams Morgan space called STROGA.

The evening will be filled with artistic and live music performances, an opportunity to purchase limited-edition prints commissioned from DC’s top artists, signature cocktails, savory bites, a VIP reception, local DC celebrities and inspirational stories from notable colon cancer survivors.

The various spokes of local social media and the Internets have buzzed about the list of DCs 100 best artists ever since Lenny Campello announced on his blog that he was putting together a book on the subject. In mid June, Lenny put out an APB on Facebook requesting volunteers to help with some formatting of the book and bibliographic editing. I volunteered and within a couple of days I received an e-mail with 21 artist documents waiting to be edited. Since the list has been announced, I was curious to fill in the cracks, and asked Lenny a few questions about the project.

DC Artists skips town to make art and avoid the oppressive heat.

I planned this trip for a year, saved my money, did a lot of research, and bought my tickets.  So the plan was to spend the month of July in Sarajevo to interview people who were there during the three and a half year siege from 1992 to 1995, and make maps with these willing interviewees of the spaces they were confined to during the Bosnian war.

The MLK Library is currently hosting a fabulous solo art exhibit by Dana Ellyn.  This exhibit is appropriately titled “Banned” and acts as a visual statement regarding Ellyn’s feelings about classic, controversial books that have a history of being “challenged and declared prohibited” from the public.
