Upcoming: Torpedo Factory Jury for New Members!

The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria VA contains 82 artist studios, six art galleries, and two art workshops. Every year we conduct a jury to bring new members into our association. Membership qualifies working artists for studio space in the Torpedo Factory.

· We are looking for innovative artists, aged eighteen or older, in the fields of painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, printmaking, collage, glass, filmmaking, photography, and fiber art. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is committed to actively pursuing a diverse membership.

· In our 36nd year and with over 500,000 visitors last year, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is a great opportunity for working artists.

· Jury Dates: April 5th - April 8th, 2010. All application materials and artwork must be received on Monday, April 5th, between 9AM and 6PM.

· Entry forms for the jury can be downloaded from the website. Go to www.torpedofactory.org/jury. There will be more information about the jury process, detailed application instructions, and a link to a printable application.

The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities,

FotoWeek DC, and DC Counts Campaign;

are partnering to issue all DC artists, at all skill levels,

a challenge: to capture the diverse beauty reflected in

the faces of Washington residents. Like the census, we seek portraits

representing people of all ages, races, and ethnic groups in each quadrant

of the city. Fifty-one portraits will be selected and exhibited at Social,

a Columbia Heights Restaurant.

Because the arts are a prominent part of Haitian culture, the event will include a musical performance, a fashion show and live painting component.

Hosted by actor Leo Breckenridge from the award winning short "U Street DC", the evening will center around the musical performance of singer/songwriter Ayanna Gregory, who has shared the stage with icons such as Maya Angelou, the Last Poets, Bill Cosby, Stevie Wonder, Dick Gregory, Isaac Hayes, Will Downing, Lou Donaldson, Jennifer Holiday, Amiri Baraka, and Sonia Sanchez. Witness live paintings by artists Rachel and Rebecca Crouch and Charles Jean-Pierre and enter the silent auction for a chance to take home original pieces. Finally, enjoy a taste of the runway with a fashion show featuring the most recent collections of designers featured in Vogue Media.

ALL proceeds will go to Partners In Health (PIH). The organization was founded by Paul Farmer - anthropologist and ethnographer - who has done extensive work in Haiti and regarding biomedicine. PIH is focused on providing health care to the most disenfranchised communities and is actively involved in the rebuilding efforts. Go here to learn more about PIH.
